My father use to make banana sandwiches with peanut butter/mayo - it did not take much to make lots of sandwiches. The mixture increased as he would squish together the banana, peanut butter and mayo to make this rich gooey spread. It was ohhh so good.
Somehow I never did like jelly with my peanut butter. I like marmalade with my peanut butter and you can't beat honey mixed in with the peanut butter. There are times I like to sprinkle a nice coating of cinnamon across the top of the peanut butter.
And nothing say yummmmmy like a toasted peanut butter sandwich! It's warm - it's gooey and ohhhh sooooo good.
I never thought I would use this line - "I remember when" there was just one or two choices of peanut butter. Peter Pan Peanut Butter was the first to arrive on the grocery store shelves in 1928 (I was not there for this) followed not long afterwards in 1932,by Skippy, and then two years later Skippy brought to us the crunchy peanut butter. Big Top came along in 1955 and in 1958 Jif was added to our choices. Jiff now operate the world's largest peanut butter plant ~ churning out 250,000 jars every day! Now that's a lot of peanuts!!!!!
If I had a choice to make and believe me there are more choices, by each peanut butter company, smooth, crunchy, honey roasted, with jelly already there, natural peanut butter with the oil floating around the top of the jar. You can even buy the peanut butter and jelly sandwich already prepared with the crust cut off. Takes all the fun out of the preparation of the peanut butter sandwich. I like Peter Pan and my daughter prefers Jiff - as she says, every good mother serves Jiff!
There is something so yummy about opening a new jar of peanut butter, as you peel back the seal of a new jar of peanut butter the aroma of peanuts hits your nose immediately and your mouth waters just thinking about that first bite. Peanut Butter - It's a good thing!!! Forget the bread - just indulge in spoonful of that rich - luxury goo.. . . . . mmmmmmmm - sooooooo soooooo good.
Now for some of us with very discriminating taste - There is the Krystal Hamburger. It is small it is square and it is has a distinct taste that stays with you long after it is eaten. in 1932 the Krystal began its way into the American culture - now Krystal is one of America's largest Restaurant chains. You won't find them above the Mason Dixon line it is a southern fare. There is no doubt that it is an acquired taste. Being a fan of this little burger since around 1955, I find myself still indulging at least once a year - I can still breath down around 6 at one sitting as long as they are fresh and have lots of yellow mustard. I am sure there is no nutritional value to them, except for the mustard and I have a friend that tells me she knows they are "steamed" from under the arms of the cooks and there is the roomer they derived from the earthworm. yikes!!! But once a year - it's just one of those delicacies one has to partipate in.
Of course, being the Southern Belle that I am, and an original Atlanta Girl, it is only fitting that the preferred beverage of choice for peanut butter and a Krystal Burger is the Coca Cola, followed secondly by a diet Coca Cola. Any other beverage does not give the full benefit one obtains in the satisfaction of sinking their teeth into a soft gooey peanut butter sandwich or a hot mustard filled Krystal.
Ohhh the joys of being a true southern belle. . . . . . .
